I was really pleased to see this advertising campaign on Crown Street today, especially when you consider the bicycle lanes along this street. When there is loads of traffic there really is nowhere to go to get out of the way of an open door.
Only 2 weeks ago my mates Emily and Annabel were wiped out by a driver that opened his door in front of them. Luckily they weren’t too badly hurt, it does happen quite frequently. It happened to a friend a couple of years ago and that incident was not pretty. The car door was bent backwards, the bike was totaled, and my mate suffered a broken wrist and collarbone.
So Yay! Sydney of City, the more awareness drivers receive about cyclists the better!

Great campaign! That bike lane looks so dangerously close to the parked cars… Ugh…

Well, we can’t always get the perfect bike lane, so at least it is a start! I do agree with Marie that the bike lane is essentially sharing the parking lane which sucks. Gotta be super vigilant about doors!

Don’t endanger yourself with those suicide lanes!

Yeah you’re right, unfortunately most of the bike lanes are situated next to parked cars, but we have to take what we can get at this point. I’m forever scanning the parked cars looking for heads so I have some sort of warning that someone may be getting in or out. I’m hoping the bike lanes will forever be improving and evolving

Don’t use that lane. It’s worse than no lane. Or at least ride the white line. Where possible, hog the lane. This kind of bike lane just builds resentment because it creates an expectation that cyclists will stay in the lane.

Agreed. I refuse to ride in lanes that put you that close to doors, and because they are there drivers get more shitty than usual because they see it and can’t understand why you’re not in it.
Hope this campaign gets through to some drivers. Dooring is an experience i’ve been through and wouldn’t wish it upon anyone.
