Recently I was given a gift voucher to M.A.D a sustainable design and art centre. I was thrilled because I love this place. I got one of these belts by Anna and Laszlo Designs. They are made from recycled tyre rubber. I preferred the chunky mountain bike designs but they were all too big for me. Instead I got a sleek, thin tyre belt which is still just as rad. It was perfect timing too – my old belt had been slowly dying these last few months and I had been procrastinating at the task of shopping for a replacement.
I also got this neat bracelet made out of bike chains, by Micheal Buick.

Excellent post. I agree that cycling is a great start and to become a sustainable cyclists conscious decisions as riders need to made. Environmental value, waste reduction and creativity will hopefully spark interest and action. But more importantly demand needs to be put on Manufactures to start thinking about the build of their bikes and the cost of it’s wasteful elements. The energy produced in large factories that pump out cheap bikes with low lifespans are not the answer.
In the meantime general awareness is usually the first step. Lead by example. I love your example “When the sustainable cyclist gets a flat, out in the wilderness, he’ll stash that torn tube, and bring it home. Right? But how many of us actually take the time to then patch-up and repair? As opposed to buying new”
