Last fall I started getting into mountain biking:
That’s me with a great borrowed bike: a Marin Pine Mountain hardtail. Now I need to get my own bike as the spring race season is only a couple months away. Do any mountain biking chicks out there have advice on a good option for a womens specific recreational level hardtail?

Hey there-
I have an 07 Gary Fisher Big Sur GS. It’s a women’s specific hardtail that I adore and have converted into a single speed for my pleasure.
I think they have stopped selling the Genesisters line
(, but you might be able to get one on Ebay for cheap money now!
Check out the bike archives in the Gary Fisher site.
Good Luck and enjoy the trails!!

P.S. Looks like they are still selling the Marlin GS frame.

Hey Kathleen,
I don’t know much about women’s specific bikes, but I do know of a couple of Canadian bike companies that make great bikes if you want to support the local industry.
Chromag, hand built in Canada make lovely bikes, I’d check them out – http://www.chromagbikes.com/
Rocky Mountain, also Canadian – Also cool bikes: http://www.bikes.com/
I still have my lovely Balfa Bel Air, it’s a cross country bike hand built in Canada, I’ve had it for years, unfortunately the company is no longer around but there seems to be lots of good Canadian bike builders out there

Brodie is also Canadian http://www.brodiebikes.com/2010/
and De Vinci http://www.devinci.com/home.html
I would have liked to get a canadian bike and Rocky Mountain was an option but I came across a great deal on a used Gary Fisher and went with that one. It’s Genesis Geometry so though not women’s specific I think it will fit well.
Looking forward to the 2010 race season!
