The New York Times reports that electric bicycles are catching on around the globe. Has anyone ever ridden one? I rode one in London, and it seemed it would be quite neat for commuting. (Kind of felt like cheating, though)

I think if they LOOK like a normal bicycle and can be ridden without compromise when the battery is flat. They are great. Particularly like the pedal-assust variety. Don’t like those Chinese looking electric cycles with small wheels and shopping basket. Probably dangerous and look too old fashioned.

I+don\’t+think+you+need+to+worry+too+much+about+how+they+will+be+to+ride+when+the+battery+is+flat.+They\’ll+be+heavy+and+that\’s+a+fact.+The+reality+is+that+running+out+of+battery+is+quite+rare+so+choose+one+based+on+what+it\’s+like+when+it+has+power,+not+when+it+doesn\’t.+You\’d+just+as+well+say+you+should+buy+tyres+based+on+how+they+roll+when+they+have+a+puncture

I’ve ridden them, and they are soooo easy to ride. Great for shopping of commuting.
I was so impressed with my test ride that I’ve ordered a pedelec (must pedal to get assist). I’ll still keep my non-electric bike for exercise and for riding with non-powered groups.
