Candy Cranks

Found these via bikerumor.com. I would rather actually ride my bike than pretend to with a doll but… at least they’re somewhat supporting cycling, right? haha

This is where I initially got the inspiration to start up an all-lady bike crew about two years ago. I’m sure some of you may have heard of them, but we don’t yet have an author from Milwaukee, where they’re from, so here’s some info. The Pedal Pusher Society is “a group of women and trans folks dedicated to creating a non-male-dominated bicycling community. Let’s ride, let’s fix our own bikes, let’s go on cycling adventures.” These gals are awesome, check out their youtube page for a couple more videos including a music video to “Beat It”!

Every Summer for the past three years, the women of Salt Lake City get together on Sunday evenings for a casual ride around town, usually ending at the park where we eat treats. I started it because I thought it’d be nice to have at least one lazy ride every once in a while where gals could ride their cruisers and townies and we could just chat and eat yummy food. I’m hoping this year we’ll get more ladies joining us!

I write and copy edit for a local magazine called Salt Lake Underground (SLUG) and when I told my editors about Candy Cranks, they decided they wanted me to write a feature on it in celebration of National Bike Month for the May issue. It doesn’t hit stands until Friday, but the article is posted online. Check it out! It features Meg, Devan and Jjay.

After joining Candy Cranks and being inspired by Meg and all of you, I decided to revamp my local female bike blog and had a local artist (Stu Pratt) draw up a logo and everything. Check it out at by clicking on the picture!

My friend and avid cyclist and filmmaker, Davey Davis, wrote and filmed an amazing bike movie that is finally premiering this upcoming weekend. It was all filmed in Salt Lake City and the cast is made up of members of the cycling community here. There’s even an alleycat scene that Davey filmed during an actual and epic alleycat he organized! I’m always posting about my little sis, but she’s probably the only gal in all of SLC that works hard to get her fixie tricks down. She’s planning to put a video out soon. Here’s some pics of her wheelies.

About a year ago my little sister Carla decided she wanted to build something. Brainstorming for something that would be useful, she decided to try making a bike rack for our living room so we wouldn’t have to untangle our bikes from the pile every day. She had a little help from our dad in building the outer frame and hauling the wood, but the rest she did herself, including the design, which she measured out to fit under the window. I think she did a pretty good job, hopefully you can see that through the shitty pictures, and it’s so nice to have, especially when I’m leaving in a hurry out the door or we have guests over.

Nothing warms you up like coffee and sprints during a Utah winter. In an effort to get more ladies in attendance, the organizers of this event let ladies race for free, which I thought was pretty awesome. Local speed demon Jessica Gilmore won the women’s final race, completing 1000 meters in 46.15 seconds.
