Regular readers may remember the ride I organised last year (see candy cranks archive). Well it’s back! This time it’s a spring affair, a more Southern route to avoid the chaos of the London Marathon, riverside riding and finishing at a nice pub by the river in Hammersmith. Around 60 ladies signed up so far. More details here. Hoping the weather will hold out – I’ll report back with pics.

Greetings!

My name’s Hanan and I live in Oakland, CA. The San Francisco Bay Area is such a cycling hub, especially for road and track racing which is what I do. I’m about five years into racing and there’s a huge women’s community here that means for our sport to be all-inclusive for women obsessed with bicycles. I’m hoping that through posting tidbits about my racing experience here on Candy Cranks, all of you, the cyclistas of the world, can feel inspired and empowered on your bikes!

Tally Ho! What!

This Saturday I was lucky enough to be one of the Head Marshalls on the Tweed Run, a charity cycle ride in dapper attire around London. The ride is the brain child of Ted Young Ing and whilst last years ride for a fairly informal affair, this year it went ballistic! Around 400 people cycled through London’s mostly friendly traffic on a beautiful spring day, a lot of them rather warm in their Tweed attire! We had penny farthings, tandems and all manner of marvellous wheeled machines.A Best dressed rider, and moustache competition,  a tea and cucumber sandwich stop in Hyde Park, and finally G&T’s all round at the finish.

Even better I got to meet fellow Candy Cranks author Clemence from Paris, who cycled over from Paris in 24 hours straight with the Mittens! A truly spiffing time was had by all and we raised over £1000 for Bikes for Africa – enough to send a shipping container full of reconditioned bikes to Africa!

Massive thanks to all involved especially Ted & Jacqui and all the marvellous marshalls and volunteers. I doff my cap to you all!

This Saturday St. John The Divine is hosting a “Blessing of the Bikes” event. It begins at 9:30am SHARP and is happening rain or shine. As an atheist who is never anywhere before noon, I’m telling you to come!

“Hi Friends,

Mark your calendar for this very special event.

Wear your usual cycle clothing and bring your bike (or skates or non-motorized scooter) INSIDE the spectacular Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine for the 12th Annual Blessing of the Bikes.

Our friend Reverend Tom, will say a few kind words and then sprinkle our bikes with Holy Water. There is a moment of silence to remember those cyclists we’ve lost in the past year, a chance for everyone to ring their bicycle bells in celebration of cycling, and we’re gone.

Please note that this event is wonderful but BRIEF — if you are even a little late, you’ll miss it! Please be on time!

Regardless of your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) you are welcome. (I happen to be Jewish – go figure!) We’ve been doing this for 12 years now, and I’ve never heard from anyone that the event made them uncomfortable. In other words, you will be blessed and welcomed; you will not be lectured.

The interesting thing to me about The Blessing of the Bikes is that some people take it very seriously, some think it’s all a big joke, and some are deeply offended. No mater which of those opinions works best for you… good on you!”

Hell yeah, cyclist solidarity! Plus, St. John The Divine is just dripping with architectural beauty, so it’s a win-win-win!

It was super fun race! 91 registered racers yesterday, 87 actually raced, and 58 actually finished! It was an adventure/scavenger hunt through downtown houston/midtown/montrose/ and ended on the east end!
