Richmond, VA has one of the best bike polo teams in the world. The thing is, they’ve never really had a legit polo court to call “home”. Rarely used tennis and basketball courts have been the place of play for the past several years, so it’s about time that hardcourt bike polo is acknowledged by the city as a real sport with a real facility.
Thursday, February 17th, RVA Bike Polo, the Cutthroats Bicycle Club, and RideRichmond are teaming together to throw one of the best fundraisers this city has ever seen…. and RVA knows how to party! We’re having Gold sprints AND a dance party all in the same night! All for a $3 donation!
Let’s help RVA Bike Polo get a legit court that they can call their own. More details here!

On Monday, a Punani Pedal Club ride happened around town, visiting Christmas tree park, Magic Island and downtown. Sadly, the ladies were way outnumbered by the guys, but we still had fun! Everyone was respectful and the group stuck together well.. overall, awesome! (Photos: Michael Keany)
And finally, we welcomed a new member to our Honolulu bike family, Eilif from Oregon who escaped the cold and landed in Hawaii with just his bike and trailer and is living off the land. Shoots! (Photos: Michael Keany)
Memphis Bike Polo has really been stepping up their game lately and Little Rock Bike Polo invited them to come up and play in a little tournament on New Years Day. Even though I knew I wouldn’t be playing, I decided to go with them just to watch them play and to check out the super awesome courts they have set up. We left early Saturday morning and got started playing around noon.
You can see from this picture how great their courts are. They asked the city if they could revamp these abandoned street hockey courts and they put a lot of work into making them perfect for polo.
After a few pick up games, they started the “official” match, which consisted of three individually timed games and whichever team had the most overall points won the match. I figured that because Little Rock had such a legit setup and Memphis plays in a parking lot surrounded by planks of wood, they that would kick our butts, but none of us really knew what to expect. Memphis ended up smoking them 21 to 12!! Even though I didn’t play, I was super excited when they won. Thanks for letting us come hang out Little Rock!!
Check out some more photos of the day on my flickr.
My name is Enikő Magda, I live in Budapest, Hungary.
We play bikepolo with our friends. Fortunately not me the only girl who plays. I ride a fixed bike. I really like it, I feels my leg belongs to the road, without brake, this give me the real freedom.
It started when I got some knee problems, and I didn’t ride a bike since two years, but one of my friend give me a fixi for a bit, and I loved it. One month later I’ve got my own one, what you can see at the picture. For bike polo, sometimes a put a brake on, but usually I don’t use it. I don’t know the boys like my hobby, to ride a fixi, but I don’t care about it, this is my life, this is my lifestyle
Strictly speaking this isn’t my bicycle as it really belongs to my Mummy – Lilly. It might as well be mine though as I wont let her go anywhere without me in my seat on the back. We come from Melbourne but are living in Perth at the moment. My favourite ride is to the local pond to feed the ducks and I get to hold the bag with the bread. My bike is a Gary Fisher Simple City 3 Speed!!

The collective is a community supported bike shop. They work with volunteers passing on knowledge about bike mechanics and maintence. They donate bicycles to kids and adults in need of a mode of transportation and empowerment. Their current building at the corner of 31st and Troost was without electricity throughout the winter. They are looking to relocated to a space that will be more supportive of their efforts. Also, bearings need grease and grease costs money. This is their major benefit of the year. Come out and support bicycle awareness and empowerment in the 816!!
